KAI(3)~1.jpg

Meet Kai, an eccentric home-free and nomadic American who lives an off-the-grid lifestyle and is proud of it. On Friday last week, this hitherto-unknown drifter hatcheted his way into the heart of the Internet, thanks to a KMPH FOX 26 interview after he stepped in — hatchet in hand — to help a man and woman in Fresno, California.

A mad man, proclaiming himself to be Jesus Christ and hell-bent on violence and destruction, had purposely run his car into an African-American utility worker and attacked the woman who tried to intervene. The crazy man’s attack didn’t stop until Kai, who was in a car that he was hitchhiking in, went at him with a hatchet and put a definite end to the attack.
The longhaired drifter then gave an all-time classic interview about the incident to reporter Jessob Reisbeck, featuring an epic “Smash! Smash! Suh-MASH!” hatchet reenactment has since gone wildly viral online, the unedited version of which has been viewed on YouTube more than 2 million times till now. But that was just the beginning. Kai has now cemented his place as a viral sensation after The Gregory Brothers, autotune masters of YouTube, have given him the remix treatment. The tune, titled “smash, Smash, SMASH!,” is one big hit. With lyrics like “No matter what you’ve done, you deserve respect,” one thing is very clear – Kai is simply awesome.
Kai’s claim to fame might have been real fast, but he disappeared from the public eye even faster. Aside from erratic Facebook updates, Kai has disappeared almost entirely, choosing to be a vagabond largely cut off from modern-day modes of communication.
There is one question Reisbeck asked Kai that completely describes the kind of person he is and the kind of life he has chosen for himself. “Do you have a last name?” Reisbeck asked Kai. “No, bro,” Kai said. “I don’t have anything,”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
