Global fashion on home turf
Fashion runs in her veins and luxury defines her life. Little surprise then, that Charu Sachdev, the emerging face of fashion in India, put aside her degrees in Law and Economics, to try her hand at fashion retail. Co-founder of luxury retail company TSG, Charu along with her sister, socialite Priya Sachdev, is working round the clock to make India the next big fashion destination.
“It is the business of fashion retail that attracted my attention. I saw an opportunity in the market and decided to enjoy the first mover advantage,” she says exuding the shrewdness of a through businesswoman. She played gracious host to renowned Belgian designer Diane Von Furstenberg on her maiden trip to India and if Charu’s perseverance is anything to go by, more are on their way.
The two sisters, Charu and Priya, are responsible for bringing some of the biggest fashion brands to the country. Their store Kitsch houses some of the biggest names like Yves Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney and Celine. So who and what makes the cut to enter her store? Is it an extension of her own style? “My style is all about being strong, yet feminine. I like to juxtapose these two sides of my personality in my personal style. I love long hair and feminine dresses — but at the same time, I love pairing it with a strong biker jacket. I like creating looks that are my own,” she says adding, “Fashion is a means to express my self — my values, my tastes and my personality.”
Talking about her plans for the future, she says, “We want to work with the best fashion brands that are written about globally in all fashion magazines in the world.” Ask her about what it’s like working with her sister and the fashionista remains tightlipped. Currently touring the globe for business, Charu politely turns down any question not pertaining to her work. Pricey? A tad bit.
