Glass act of geek chic
Big-rimmed spectacles in vibrant colours seem to be the latest rage these days. From Bollywood celebs including Sonam Kapoor, Vidya Balan to Divya Dutta and Hollywood stars, actors and models are increasingly seen sporting nerdy yet stylish glasses at parties, red carpet events and other occasions. Deepika Padukone’s bespectacled look in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has been grabbing eyeballs and the actress is so much in love with her glasses that she wishes to keep them as a souvenir.
Talking about the trend, image consultant and grooming expert Yatan Ahluwalia says, “Spectacles go with certain face structures. They go best with angular face cuts. Coloured and rimless glasses are a strong but passing trend for both men and women. To avoid marks on your face, opt for a lighter frame. Over-sized glasses can look nerdy and dated, so keep the face structure in mind before opting for one.”
Film producer and director Kiran Rao’s iconic style includes her famous owl frames. Rao carries it with confidence and grace. Geeky glasses have undoubtedly found an important place in the urban elite’s style diaries. “While smart bags, sexy footwear, elegant watches and belts are important accessories, even smart eyewear can completely transform your overall personality and add to the glam quotient if you carry them smartly,” says Delhi socialite and model Amanpreet Wahi.
With people from actors to professionals and youngsters are increasingly adopting the trend, these glasses have become a must-have fashion accessory. “For me fashion is something that is cool and quirky and grabs eyeballs. Geeky glasses have become a fashion statement and almost everyone’s wearing them in colleges, offices and outings with friends for that quirky yet ‘intellectual look’. They really look cool and add a sense of maturity to one’s face. So, pick up a pair of these and rock the party in your new nerdy avatar. Over-sized spectacles if carried with the right attitude adds a quirky touch to one’s personality and men tend to fall for girls with innocent and stylish looks,” quips model and celebrity stylist Neha Panda.
City-based socialite Ramneek Pantal says, “The geeky glass trend can be mainly attributed to Bollywood divas who are frequently seen sporting glasses of various patterns, shapes and sizes. Colourful geeky glasses are such a rage now that even youngsters are often seen flaunting them.”
