Every season new fashion trends become a part of every girl’s wardrobe. The choice varies from pants to palazzos, long skirts to short ones, denims to shorts, and in between, the Indian traditional wear remains a constant. And now that leading Bollywood ladies are endorsing the traditional Indian look, salwaar kameez and sari make for a perfect style statement.
There was a time when Indian wear was ignored for Western outfits as a crop of women found them “unglamorous” but now actresses like Sonakshi and Sonam are redefining fashion trends with glamorous Indian wear. It is high time that women should stop under estimating the power of Indian dressing, feel designers and fashionistas.
“Traditional is the new glamorous now,” said actress Sonakshi Sinha while promoting Lootera in the capital recently. While she has always been criticised for her traditional wears, she is not the only one to endorse the Indian look. Sonam Kapoor can be seen in Indian wear in Raanjhanaa and will be seen wearing salwaar kameez in her upcoming film Bhaag Milkha Bhaag after she rocked the red carpet in a sari at the Cannes awards this year. Shraddha Kapoor looks ravishing in a lot of Indian outfits in Aashiqui 2. Shruti Hassan is also looking beautiful in her desi avatar in Ramaiya Vastavaiya. Deepika Padukone’s traditional look in Chennai Express is the most awaited while Madhuri Dixit continues to look graceful in her traditional outfits.
Designer Mandira Wirk says, “I believe Indian wear has now empowered Western wear as well. Indian wear and accessories have been storming international fashion event with luxury brands like Chanel also infusing it in their collection. We have reached an era were Indian women value Indian wear and it’s a must have in every girl’s closet. Also Bollywood celebs have helped designers to promote Indian wear.”
Designers are making constant innovations to make Indian wear look more appealing. “Many designers are reviving Indian crafts as there is a huge potential in Indian wear. Every season there are new innovations and style changes to make the outfits exciting,” shares designer Samant Chauhan.
Mandira adds, “Designers are coming up with newer blending styles and are contemporising the Indian silhouettes. I like to play around with backs and different necklines to give out a sensuous and attractive feel to the body shape in comparison to Western outfits, as it leaves room for right amount of curves at the right places.”
What works in favour of Indian wear is also the comfort factor. Socialite Ramneek Pantal says, “You can never deny the comfort that you get in Indian outfits. While Western outfits have certain restrictions, Indian wear allows you to be free and at ease. I feel a girl, who can confidently walk in a sari is much more prettier than anyone else in a Western outfit.”
Hailing Sonakshi Sinha as a trendsetter, designer Rina Dhaka says nothing can be hotter than a sari.
“Nothing is as elegant, sexy and glamorous as a sari. Remember Zeenat Aman dancing in a sari in Roti Kapda Aur Makaan and Hema Malini in Johny Mera Naam. Sonakshi does justice to her style besides looking pretty when she wears Indian clothes. They look glamourous any day,” says Rina.
