Girls with principles

Andy Murray’s girlfriend Kim Sears is one girl with principles — she insists on paying her own way on their dates. Many other women feel the same and seem to follow financial independence. They are now breaking stereotype rules and paying for their own bills, which is troubling their counterparts.
With the younger generation of women at par with men, being dependent on someone is displeasing. “It’s upsetting if my partner keeps paying for our dates. And being independent, sometimes it’s my responsibility to pay for our dates too and I think they should respect our feelings,” says Hina Javed, a graduate.
Bhavil Thakker, a chartered accountancy student, says, “Sometimes it’s ok, but not always. If the relationship is just starting you would agree, thinking of not hurting your partner’s feelings, but not always. It might result in a tiff between the two.”
“Would anybody like to depend on someone? If they are independent then why not pay for their dates? If their lovers are open-minded, I am sure they would be game,” says model Nandika Nair.
There are some who feel it’s important to follow the tradition.
Actor Arun Vijay says, “As far as I am concerned I would pay the bill. And from a gentleman’s point of view I would not allow her to spend, as it has been a tradition for ages. They could be independent in many other ways but I would approach her in such a way that I don’t hurt her feelings.”
People have different perspectives, actor Prassana says, “Nowadays, women have come out of their shell and are independent. When they could decide their career paths and life partners, why not be independent and share the bills. For decades it’s the copyright of a man to pay, but there is nothing wrong in going for a paid holiday. However if men pay it boosts up their image.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
