GenY pumped up for sporty fun after work
Playing sports not only helps you stay fit, but is also a great way to meet new people. Sport 365, a new sports company in the capital, seeks to provide young professionals with a fun way to play sports and socialise on a regular basis. This new venture seeks to give adults in the city easy access to playing a wide range of traditional as well as new and exciting games.
“The idea is to give anyone above 21 years of age a chance to get out of their monotonous routines, to play sports on a regular basis and meet new people. We encourage players to come up with wacky team names and wear funky costumes,” says Ajay Gupta, founder, Sport365.
Before the start of the actual games league, a friendly six-a-side football game was organised on February 5 in the city, which saw the participation of regular players and groups from the Chinese and French embassies as well. The basketball league will start on February 12 and games will be played in Mount Carmel School followed by happy hours in Vasant Vihar. Table tennis games will be conducted on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Apart from court games, those interested in bowling and golf can also register.
So people can unwind and relax after sweating it out on the field. “The post-game party, like the one that was held at Moets in Defence Colony recently, is something everyone enjoys. After playing, you can relax and interact with new people while chatting over food and drinks,” says Preet Singh, one of the registered members.
In the next few months, other fun sports will be introduced on a trial basis, such as ultimate frisbee, kickball, water polo and pool, races, including obstacle courses, triathlons and scavenger hunts, and adventure sports. With reasonable participating costs, the sports come complete with game equipment, funky T-shirts and qualified referees for all teams.
Says Arvind Balagopalan, who has registered for the football sessions, “One of the hassles in playing sports is arranging for a team or equipment or ground. But these are taken care of here.”
And you don’t need to be a professional or amateur player to participate in the games. “I live in Gurgaon and have been trying to play squash. But the sporting facilities in Gurgaon are bad. You either have to be a member of some club to participate or the membership fee is very steep. This new club doesn’t have these limitations. The only criteria is an interest in sports,” says Balagopalan.
An interesting trend is the registration by many women. Deepti Aggarwal, who has registered for the football sessions, says, “Such a sporting opportunity has been missing in the urban landscape. We usually have such facilities for kids in schools. Adults who are interested in some sport pursue it at an amateur level for lack of proper training centres.”
