Gear up for some action

It isn’t easy to get a good break in the city of dreams. But Abhishek Anand from Delhi, who is debuting with the film Chakradhar, held on to his optimism. When almost four years ago, he went to Mumbai after completing his graduation for Amity University, Noida and dabbling in the Delhi theatre circuit for a year, he found the going tough.
He took up small assignments in the beginning. “I have done small-time photo shoots and have even appeared in music videos. But I always wanted to be a part of the realistic cinema genre,” he says.
That is when he got an offer to portray the character of Shravan Kumar, the lead protagonist in Chakradhar. “The character of Shravan is based on a real-life boy from Varanasi who fought against the corrupt system in his college,” he says and adds, “I am portraying the role of a guy who wants to study in a particular college in Varanasi where his father has been a peon for many years. He revolts against the anti-social and political activities in the college and wants to change them. However, he gets entangled in the situation and is jailed.”
Abhishek says that in real life too the guy Shravan couldn’t win. “Because of the local politicians and the mafia in Varanasi, the story wasn’t highlighted in the media as well. When I first heard the story, I was almost in tears. And I felt good too that I’m getting to portray a strong character who raised his voice against injustice,” says Abhishek.
Another thing that thrilled the 26-year-old actor was that he was getting to do a lot of stunts during the action sequences. “I’ve always loved watching Sunny Deol and Akshay Kumar doing the action sequences. In fact, in a way, they inspired me to train in martial arts when I was in college,” says Abhishek, revealing that he has done all the action scenes in the movie on his own.
In fact, the action director of the movie, Abbas Ali Moghul, suggested that he use a body double.
“But I insisted on doing the scenes on my own and now after the movie is complete, I feel immensely satisfied,” he concludes.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
