Gauti tweets for women’s rights
The usually sober and shy cricketer Gautam Gambhir, popularly called ‘Gauti’, recently engaged in an interactive session with his fans on his new twitter handle @gautamgambhir. The topic of discussion did not revolve around Gauti’s passion for his profession, but around woman-centric issues where the cricketer said that he favoured exemplary punishment for rapists.
“I am all for an exemplary punishment. I think it should be such that it should send chill down d spines of the ppl,” he wrote in reply to a fan, who asked him how the rapists should be punished.
On being asked why girls are criticised for wearing western clothes, Gambhir wrote, “It is like stopping people from walking on the roads because a lunatic doesn’t have brakes in his car. RIDICULOUS.”
We asked the cricketer why he came up with this idea of striking a debate on women-centric issues and what solution would he like to offer for the same. Gautam shared, “I am not a reformist but sometimes when I see these issue-based debates aired on national channels, I feel they are not offering anything concrete. The idea here is to at least know from most of these young followers on my Twitter handle as to what they think about these simmering issues. I think the upbringing of an Indian male needs to be relooked at. He needs to be taught to respect his sister, classmates and his teachers. I think Bollywood also needs to look at how women are projected in its movies. It is important to have fresh scripts that show a male character respecting women.”
About the one thing that he can’t manage without his wife Natasha, the cricketer smiled and quipped, “That is a tough one, and she will kill me if I get this wrong. I think I am bad with choosing clothes for myself. She finds my wardrobe too drab and now I let her pick stuff for me.”
