Folk rock gets a ticket to movieland
Folk rock has been their forte. Now, Bengaluru-based band, Swarathma, that performed in the city for the Dewarists Stage at Bacardi NH7 Weekender recently, have composed the music for critically acclaimed, Great Elephant and have been nominated in the “best composer” category for South Asian Rising Star award.
“We came together just like any young college band at Fine Arts College in Mysore. We played at various college fests in the city before branching out to Bangalore. After a brief hiatus, we returned with a changed line-up including Montry Manuel, Sanjeev Nayak and Varun Murali, while Pavan Kumar KJ continues,” says Jishnu Dasgupta, the bass guitarist.
The band members knew Srinivas, the director of Great Elephant, as a member of Mumbai-based metal act, Scribe from before. “When he asked us to collaborate for his film, we didn’t think twice,” says Jishnu.
When we asked them if they would like to take more film projects, Pavan says, “Definitely! Considering the present experiments happening in film music and its acceptance, we would love to. But we would retain the sound of the band.” The band released their second album, Topiwalleh in June and are in the process of promoting it with concert tours. “We plan to work with a diverse bunch of artists to release special remixes of our own songs,” adds Varun.
