Felix was fast, memes faster
Last week, when ‘Fearless Felix’ Baumgartner completed an astonishing dive from 24.5 miles above the Earth’s surface, he earned the respect of one and all, for even a minor miscalculation could’ve ended in the freefalling daredevil spinning madly out of control or even making his blood boil and his brain exploding due to the intense pressure.
But the 43-year-old Austrian kept his cool and executed the stunt to the T, bringing his spin into control despite the fact that he had broken the sound barrier. He hurtled towards Earth’s surface touching speeds up to 834 miles per hour, and by opening his parachute at the right time, he glided back down safely and landed on mother earth’s comforting surface.
The world looked on with amazement, praying every second of his four minute 20 second freefall that he land safely back on earth. And after he did land, there were congratulations and photos of appreciation circling all around. Till then, the Internet trollers had been waiting. Patiently. And not being ones to miss out on such a huge occasion, it began!
People started sharing troll photos — pictures that are Photoshopped to include funny, abstract and absurd events or poses by people to make the original photo look funny — on Twitter, tumblr and other such photo-sharing websites. Right from including animated characters such as The Roadrunner Show’s Wile E. Coyote and 78-year-old Carl Fredrickson from the movie Up, to making movie references including The Death Star from the movie Star Wars in the background and a picture of King Leonidas’s foot kicking the skydiver out of his capsule, copying a scene from the movie 300.
