The model-turned- actor and now entrepreneur talks about her latest business venture and her first love, fashion

One of the most prominent faces in the Indian fashion circuit, Dipannita Sharma has graced the ramp for more than a decade now. Having been the muse for most top designers in the country, she has donned the best couture in India and around the world, but unlike most of her contemporaries, Dipannita’s natural progression after modelling hasn’t been to start a fashion boutique or turn into a glamorous fashion choreographer.

The leggy lass has instead, gone for something much more opulent. She has flourished as an entrepreneur starting off her own yacht-chartering venture, and from the enthusiasm in her voice, she seems to be loving every bit of it.
“My husband and I love the sea. Some of the best times and holidays we’ve had have been on the cruise. Besides, Mumbai looks so completely magical from the other side of the shore that we wanted others to have a taste of it too,” says Dipannita, who has started the venture with her husband, Dilsher Singh Atwal a Delhi-based businessman. And how does she find the shift from being in the limelight? “It’s a wonderful feeling to have something of your own. Our yacht is a beautiful Arabian dhow and we host some of the most fun events on it. It could be a lavish hen party, a fashion exhibition or a classy musical evening. And when we’re not letting it out, we’re simply enjoying it ourselves,” smiles the diva.
The shift from fashion to luxury hasn’t been very difficult for her. She has enjoyed both fields immensely. Talking about the former she says, “When I took up fashion, it was not just a job or a source for me to get my next paycheck from. It was my life. I was always fascinated with it, and when I won myself a free portfolio at a college event, it gave my passion a boost.”
Talking about her own personal style, she says, “I like to describe my style as chic and feminine. And yes, I am brand conscious to a certain extent. Dior and Chanel are my absolute favourites. But it’s not like I am brand-obsessed. My style is more like high street-meets-high couture.”
So can we expect to see more of the Ladies v/s Ricky Bahl girl on the big screen again? “I’ve become a tad choosy about the projects that I take up now. So yes, I am reading scripts. But I am in no hurry to get back to commercial projects. I’m having the best time managing the yacht venture with my husband and besides, the monsoons are here and it’s a good time to take time off and bask in its glory,” she smiles.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
