Former cricketer Atul Wassan assures that a sportsperson understands his fans’ extreme behaviour and doesn’t let it affect him. “Indian fans go overboard with their feelings. They treat a cricketer like a demi god and are equally harsh with him when he performs badly. All players are familiar with this behaviour and don’t let it affect them, but they would love a balanced approach. At times, fans do expect a lot but they must understand that not all matches can be won.”
Cricket is nothing less than a religion for Indians, and this emotional attachment results in extreme reactions in fans. Prateek Shah, social media consultant says, “When we win, people dance on the street, but if we lose, then nobody can be worse than us at bad mouthing. Is the craze a little crazy? Yes. Is there a way out of it? No, we will continue to be the same forever.”
