F1 knight’s speed thrills
He has been an inspiration for Formula One racers and fans alike. For many years, Michael Schumacher has lived and breathed racing. Six years ago when he announced his retirement after a successful stint with Ferrari, many were disappointed but Schumacher made a comeback.
He says that for three years that he was away, he didn’t really realise that he was missing cars so much. “But when I got a call from Mercedes, I knew I had a mission and took up the challenge,” says the racer, during the launch of Homestead’s Michael Schumacher World Tower in the capital.
Schumacher’s second stint hasn’t been very successful but when asked if his retirement will be a loss for the F1 industry, he shoots back, “What I’ve created as a sportsman should be remembered as a legacy.”
The sports icon is pleased with the response he has got in India. He thinks the probable reason could be because F1 got popular in India around the same time when he started out and reached his peak. “I think that is why a lot of Indian fans have so much interest in me,” he says.
However, he is not thinking about his retirement right now. “I want to keep myself focused till the time I’m here and think about nothing else,” he says.
