Exams dampen Diwali festivities
Although Diwali is the most awaited festival, yet for many college students it’s a dull affair this time as examination fever has gripped many. In many Delhi University colleges, the examination dates are lined up for next month due to which students are unable to enjoy the festivities this year.
For many freshers the green signal to the recently introduced semester system is a major reason for giving them examination blues in the month of October. Since DU was closed for 10 days earlier this month, the syllabus in many subjects is still not complete and students have no option but to attend all the classes. Apoorv Kumar, a first year student, says, “My hometown is Bihar and I was planning to go home for Diwali and stay there for a week. Since we have just two official holidays this Diwali, I won’t be able to go and come back so soon. Our course isn’t complete and college professors are taking extra classes to finish the syllabus, so bunking college even for one day isn’t feasible. The semester exams are scheduled from November end and we have very less time in hand.”
Sanya Mehra, a first year commerce student from Kamala Nehru College, is disappointed as she has no time to enjoy Diwali festivities. She says, “I had no idea that we would be asked to finish the syllabus in six months and sit for an exam. The professors are rushing through the course and there’s hardly any time for celebrating festivals.”
Shikha Singh, a student from Lady Shri Ram College, says, “Practical exams for many courses will start from November first week in DU colleges, so most of the students are completing practical notes and submitting assignments now. The annual festival of our college is also postponed to January-February, which used to happen in November till last year. There is no time to celebrate anything till the exams are over.”
