Don’t ignore head injuries
Actor Hrithik Roshan recently underwent brain surgery as he was suffering from chronic subdural hematoma, a bleeding below the dura matter of the brain that slowly developed into a clot due to an accidental injury.
The most common cause of brain injury is accidents either on the road, work place or home. While Hrithik suffered from an injury which at that time appeared very trivial, the damage to the brain matured in a period of six weeks and caused him headaches and drowsiness. Had it not been identified it could have become serious.
Mild head injuries can be caused due to tripping, falling or slipping on the head. Almost 50 per cent patients suffer from some type of internal bleeding in the brain.
The size of the bleeding determines the severity. The more the bleeding, more are the chances of a larger blood clot that can increase the pressure in the body.
Clots large or small must be treated, states Dr Subodh Raju of Kamineni Hospitals. “A clot can form when a person is very hypertensive; diseased blood vessels, bleeding and clothing disorders are some of the causes.
“Mostly a clot is treated with medicines but in case of an injury, a surgery is the best option,” he says.
A clot can lead to severe neurological deficits like paralysis, unconsiousness, coma and also death. Elderly people can develop blood clots and so can the young with a history of trivial trauma.
