Destiny’s child Yaami likes to stay grounded
She might have started out with commercials and TV serials, but with her impressive debut in the film, Vicky Donor, Yaami Gautam sent out a clear message — that she was indeed an actress to be reckoned with. After remarkable performances in teleserials like Chand Ke Paar Chalo and Yeh Pyaar Na Hoga Kum, a successful audition for an unconventional film has brought Yaami where she is today. Down south, the actress began her career in the Kannada film industry with a movie titled, Ullasa Utsaha, and was later discovered by Radha Mohan and cast in his Tamil-Telugu bilingual, Gouravam. Since then, there has been no looking back. A true advocate of destiny, there are many dreams that this young starlet wishes to accomplish, including essaying the role of a warrior princess some day.
A firm believer, be it in the traditional and the unconventional, it is her faith that has brought her thus far, claims this pretty 24-year-old. Success has indeed come calling as she talks about her stint in the industry, “Since I have worked in both TV and films, I can say that the modus operandi is what is different. When you are in TV, you have no time to breathe at all, you are shooting continuously for 48-50 hours at a stretch. There is immense pressure of shooting back-to-back episodes too. With films, it’s a different kind of pressure. You are busier and you have to travel more. But the creative process, I think, is not compromised in films. There is the luxury of doing things with creative liberty.”
It was an audition and a screen test that got her the role of Ashmita Roy in Vicky Donor. However, Yami says that if not for acting she would have been an IAS officer. “I was studying to become one. After my schooling I applied at Punjab University and I was very serious about pursuing my studies. That is why being in this industry is a surprise to everyone, including myself.”
Yami reveals that she loves cooking for her family. “I don’t know how much they enjoy eating it, but I definitely love cooking. I love reading and watching films during my free time. I never knew that my love for films would take me this far. There is hardly a Hindi film that I have not watched.
