‘Destiny’s child’ in Buddha’s next
I feel I am truly a destiny’s child. I’ve always wanted to be a performer and I am living my dream, I couldn’t have asked for more,” says Sheena Chohan, model-turned actor, who is excited about her next big project with Buddhadev Dasgupta.
Talking about her role in Buddhadev’s upcoming movie, Sheena informs, “I am playing the female lead in this untitled film. The film is a series of short films based on 13 poems written by literary doyen Rabindranath Tagore. I had studied Tagore’s literature in school, but never thought one day I would be a part of a project that will be a tribute to this Nobel laureate. I have started work on my character and I am reading more about Tagore’s work to give my best in the film.”
Life so far has been eventful for this pretty dame, as she decided to go with the flow after modeling and acting in advertisements. The starry-eyed girl came into the spotlight when she won I am voice at I AM SHE, 2010, beauty pageant. Soon after winning the contest, she bagged the Malayalam film, The Train opposite Southern superstar Mammootty, which was directed by Jayaraj.
Though it wasn’t easy for Sheena to work in a Malayalam film as she couldn’t understand the language, but she was guided by Mammootty himself during the shoot of The Train. “When I shot my first scene with Mammootty sir, I was overwhelmed. Before signing this film, I saw several Malayalam movies and managed to learn some words. I give due credit to our director and Mammootty sir who made me feel comfortable on the sets and I was able to complete the movie successfully.”
A former model Sheena admits that transition into films was not easy. She gives credit to her mentors who guided her right.
Talking about her journey so far, Sheena says, “I am half Bengali and Sikh and was raised in Kolkata. I came to Delhi and learnt acting from theatre guru Arvind Gaur. I shifted base to Mumbai and was mentored by Sushmita Sen for the I Am She pageant and also pursued an acting course from Anupam Kher’s acting school. I never gave up on my passion and I think that’s why right opportunities came my way.”
