Delhi is the hot pink destination
With homosexuality being de-criminalised and rainbow parades attaining the status of annual fests, India is hosting gay visitors like never before. And gay-travel operators are working overtime to promote the country as a ‘pink’ destination.
Thanks to the interesting LGBT-run establishments — gay bars, boutiques, spas and saunas for gay people — Delhi features prominently in the itinerary. “The main purpose is to ensure a memorable and discrimination free trip for the LGBT travellers and at the same time entwine some ‘pink experiences’ for them,” says Bhuvan Mehta of Pink Escapes.
“These tours act as good starting points for the international travellers to meet Indians and get an insight into the local culture. These also act as good interactive platforms for the gay community,” he says.
Rajat Singhla, gay-friendly head of operations Pink Vibgyor, after completing his studies from London and New Zealand, pursued his passion for travel and chose to work for the gay community in India. “I have always had gay friends who are very vibrant and lively people and have a passion for travelling. With the changing laws, I felt that a new opportunity can be explored here,” he says. “We aim at giving gay-friendly services and help them discover the gay side of India,” he says.
“India has a lot to offer in terms of culture, tradition, heritage, temple architecture and beaches. The capital city has totally accepted gays and I feel welcome here. Historically too, being gay hasn’t been a taboo here, the evidence of which is present on the Khujaraho temples. And gays have now got a legal nod too,” says Mark Hill, a frequent visitor from Britian.
Bhuvan informs that a tour package to Delhi comprises excursions to showcase its rich heritage along with visits to new-age gay establishments to give the visitors a sneak peek into the evolving gay scene of the city. “We make sure to provide them with gay or gay-friendly tour managers, guides and drivers and introduce them to LGBT-run NGOs and chairites,” he says.
