‘Delhi deserves a longer trip’

Delhi has successfully established itself on the world’s fashion map. And that coming from a reputed British designer, Simom Carter, should hold some weight. Simon joins the list of international fashion icons that have been visiting the country’s fashion capital lately.

We caught up with Carter during a busy croquet session at the British High Commission recently, and he spoke about how he is impressed by the growing fashion market of the city.
“This is my first visit to India and I am surprised by the fashion sensibilities of the people here. I am glad to witness that the city malls house all the major brands of the world,” he said.
The designer, who is also a seasoned croquet player, displayed his skill at the quintessentially British game at the event, held in association with The Collective as a part of the ongoing British celebration.
Talking about his love for game, Simon said, “Even if I am partying, I can’t detach myself from the brand and my work. But the game is my best way to unwind,” he said.
The designer said that Delhi deserves a longer trip, and he will come back to explore it further. “Unlike Mumbai, the Delhi hardly has high rises, which gives it an open, airy feel. I am in love with New Delhi’s architecture,” he said.
Even his encounter with Delhi’s monkeys is going to serve a brainwave for the designer. “Why not create a Delhi-line called, Cheeky Monkey!” he quips. “But at a serious note, I fear that with fashion overdose, India should not lose its rich cultural legacy and identity,” he says. “The country has truly touched all my senses — sight, smell, touch, feel and taste,” he signs off.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
