‘Dance brings solace to my heart’
Anupriya Guha, 23, who recently gave a solo Bharatanatyam performance (traditional margam) at IIC in the city, started learning Bharatnatyam since the age of five — first under the tutelage of Padma Bhushan Dr Yamini Krishnamurthy and later under Padmashree Saroja Vaidyanathan for the past 13 years.
“My gurus have shaped me rightly as a dancer,” says Anupriya of her gurus. Now working as a science teacher in the Indian School, Anupriya also likes to listen to the songs of the 80’s and loves to watch cricket and classic Hollywood movies.
Anupriya has given delivered lectures in front of foreign delegates from Taiwan, Maldives, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia. She believes to perform in front of a large audience, “one needs to be fully confident about what you are going to deliver and this confidence can be obtained only by sincerity, hard work and regular practice.” Talking about the importance of dance in her life she says, “Dance to me the divine form through which I can express my inner feelings. Dance brings solace to my heart.” Regular practice is what has made Anupriya the queen of the dancing floor. “In the evenings, a regular practice session of 1.5 to 2 hours is what I always do in order to master whatever I have learnt.”
So what inspired Anupriya to become a dancer? “Since I was a kid, I used to attend concerts of many legendary artists with my parents and dreamt of becoming like them one day .The styles, the footwork, the abhinaya, the costumes, makeup, and the jewellery — everything inspired me to take up dance as my career. Dance is not only my interest but my soul,” she says.
