CWG on song with 7 musical tributes
It seems music is the only thing to look forward to during the Commonwealth Games. Hoping to make the sporting extravaganza a success, musicians are setting the right rhythm. They are trying their best to “alleviate the mood of the Games” with their work. After A.R. Rahman’s tweaked CWG theme song and Euphoria’s Dilli anthem, a host of songs have been released by well-known singers and musicians. These include Khel Le with bhangra beats by Daler Mehndi; a tri-lingual song dedicated to
Shera, the Games mascot, by Shibani Kashyap, Vikramjit Singh Sahney and Milind; Anand Raj Anand’s India Me Lag Gaya Mela and Kailash Kher’s Yaaron Jashn Manao that will be released on October 1.
Singer Mika too is planning to come up with a CWG song soon and Raman Kapoor launched a song titled Shubhankar to welcome CWG visitors recently.
Kher says that the CWG is a big event for our country and we should take pride in the fact that we are hosting it. “My song is like a chant. With words like Swagat ko taiyar hai Dilli, dhum macha jao mere sang nacho gaao... Yaaron Jashn Manao, we want to boost the confidence of players. As they are under pressure to perform, music is something that will ease their tension,” says Kher, dipping into history to give an example. He says that during the reign of Prithviraj Chauhan, a singer named Chandravar Bai used to accompany the king every time he went for battle. “He took the singer along because listening to music during tough times eased tension. My song will work in the same manner for athletes,” he says.
While musicians have their own reasons to come up with songs, some youngsters feel that the deluge is adding to the confusion.
Says Shivani Saxena, a college student, “So many songs don’t speak much about our unity. It seems everybody is coming up with their own songs because they are not happy with the official song.”
Another college student, Rohan Kashyap talking about the Fifa World Cup says, “Their theme song Waka Waka was hugely popular. Everyone all over the the world was well-aware of the song months before the event. Here, with not even 10 days left for the Games, we till now don’t know much about the official theme song and the number of songs are adding to the confusion. If we ourselves aren’t familiar with the anthem, how will the invitees and delegates come to know of it?”
However, singer Shibani Kashyap says that the CWG is the biggest event in the country in a long time, and so many songs and other cultural activities say a lot about the involvement of artistes in the event. “We all are excited about it. And what better than music to lift the mood? It’s good that so many people are coming up with different things to make the event a success,” she says.
