A comic tale of two countries

The small screen is going big places! The upcoming show on Sab TV, I Love My India, takes a quirky look at the lives of Indians based in London. Veteran actress Himani Shivpuri, who’s making her television comeback with this show, says the show will be a comedy, although not of the laugh-out-loud variety. “This will be a comedy, but it’s not slapstick.

We are trying to explore emotional comedy in a light-hearted way. Let’s see how the show works now,” she says.
The shooting for the show has already begun, but it’s only now that they are moving to London.
Explaining her decision to return to the small screen with this particular show, Himani says she liked the kind of light-hearted easy viewing the show promoted. “My favourite show on television was Office Office. It was a realistic show and they dealt with the issues in a serious yet funny manner. I feel that is how comedy should be. You should tackle real issues while making people laugh,” she says, invoking Charlie Chaplin into the mix. “He used to make you laugh and cry all at once. That is the kind of emotional humour which needs to be encouraged.”
The show will also reunite Himani with Deeya and Tony Singh, with whom she worked on several shows in the past. “I worked with their DJ’s Creative Unit for Banegi Apni Baat and Parvarish earlier, and I know viewers love their soaps. So I’m back,” she smiles.
But that does not mean she is content with it; she now wants to move into films as well. “I am an actress and love doing roles that challenge me, be it on TV or films. I have, in the past, worked in comedy and emotional films, done negative as also happy roles. I just love doing roles that are challenging,” she says.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
