Charades on a stick!

It’s been an intensely busy fortnight, and I’m spending way too much time on things that don’t really matter. This revelation is hardly new, but a mail earlier this week from a Dr Suresh Jariwala from Chidambaram, administered

something of a wake-up call. The good doctor is 56 years old and apparently reads my articles on games. But more significantly, he sees game-play as an important activity to stimulate the brain and delay its degeneration.
An excess of work and no play, could certainly lead to de-generation of mind and soul. So in the middle of some burning priorities, courtesy clients who just don’t seem to be able to plan ahead, I reached for this delightful tube of Dip Sticks Charades!
The marvelously finished tube opens to reveal 80 pharma test strip-like sticks. The double side printed sticks feature a mix of films, books, plays and television programmes. Produced by Talking Tables, UK and possibly manufactured in China, this is clearly one of the slickest takes on charades.
Despite regular-to-unhealthy levels of satellite television channel viewing, some of the TV programmes on the sticks are unfamiliar. Any charades player will know this doesn’t really matter at all. My personal style tends to be exaggerated enactment of scenes, which could be long and confusing. But my usual competitors are ruthlessly efficient at charades. Clearly their brains are used actively during play! This game is great when played in teams, but works in a two-player mode as well. Surprisingly, it is good as a solo brain teaser, as you quietly figure out how you might have clued!

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
