Probably director Prakash Jha was right when he insisted on more security for actor Arjun Rampal while promoting their movie Chakravyuh at Hindu College in Delhi University. The team, including actors Abhay Deol, Manoj Bajpai, Esha Gupta and newcomer Anjali Patil, was literally mobbed at their maiden promotion in the hostel complex area in Hindu campus.

And the 30 bouncers, that Jha insisted on, themselves were star-struck.
Mariyam Siddiqui, one of the students in the organising team, had a tough time managing the crowd. “Everyone was so excited. Since Arjun happens to be a Hinduiite, students went over the top. Generally classes get over by 1.30pm, but many students stayed back to catch a glimpse of the cast, and of course, Arjun and Esha Gupta were the major attraction. You could see many boys perched on the roof of the boy’s hostel and many sitting on the window sills. They reserved the most viable spots hours before the team was slated to reach,” says Mariyam.
Though the team was two hours late in reaching the venue, students patiently waited for the actors to turn up and the scorching sun was not a problem at all. “I stood at the same spot for 2 hours, but that was fine. It would not have been possible to see the stars from so close had I changed my position,” says Chirag, who finally managed to grab a CD distributed by the crew.
And when the team, dressed in their costume from the film, reached the college campus, Arjun could not help recalling his college days. A Hindu alumni, the actor kept pointing towards the room in the hostel that he occupied while he was studying there. “That is the room I used to occupy and would often sneak out from,” he was heard telling Abhay Deol before starting with his promotional speech.
However, the hysteria around the cast refused to die as many students surged towards the stars and in the mayhem, a girl grabbed Arjun’s shirt much to the displeasure of director Jha. He kept repeating, “Kya kar rahe ho, kya kar rahe ho,” while Arjun took it sportingly saying he is only too glad it’s him and not Esha.
Recalling the drama, Sakshi Mendiratta, a BA (Hons) Economic, first year student, could not stop laughing, “I don’t know who were the people who pulled Arjun’s shirt, but I hope he will always remember coming to Hindu College now. I agree the students got a bit excited, but it is okay. Firstly, we don’t get to see stars every day and secondly, promoting their movies in college helps these actors connect with their fan following besides ensuring better turnout in theatres,” ends Sakshi.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
