Massachusetts-based software products company, Parametric Technology Corporation (PTC) has a technology that helps manufacturers analyse carbon and other key environmental impacts during product development and manufacturing. The aim of its InSight Product Analytics solution is to track carbon at all the levels of a product’s sourcing, assembly line and end of life! For instance if a car maker is sourcing a tyre from a manufacturer in India, he may track down its carbon footprint from the initial stage (like the basic material used, latex from Malaysia), developed in a country (like Korea), going on to another market where the tyre was actually made (China) to a country where it reached by ship (India) or was sent by train (Taiwan). The analysis will help a buyer differentiate the carbon footprints from one manufacturer to another and select the product responsibly. The best part of the software is that it also measures the carbon impact on design, as every company is now trying to reduce its carbon footprint from the design stage.
