Capture India’s soul in 3 minutes

What other than a short film by citizens of a country can define the country better? The Public Diplomacy Division of the Ministry of External Affairs, has put up a global video contest, “India Is..” that is open to anyone with a knack for videography.
Abhay Kumar, under secretary, USPD says that the competition is a brand building exercise that aims to pull the attention of youngsters towards India as a nation. “The idea came from a video competition that the US state department conducted on the topic ‘Democracy is…’”, says Kumar and adds that the basic theme is further divided in sub categories as “India is wherever you are”, “India is colourful” and “India is creative”. “We have received 35 entries till now and our Facebook page has more than 23,000 likes. We have also roped in Shashi Tharoor and filmmaker Shekar Kapur as our brand ambassadors,” he adds.
The competition requires a three-minute film of riveting visuals that can showcase the essence of India. Once selected, the videos will be uploaded on www.india’s.org to be judged by a six-member jury.
Young and budding filmmakers think that it is a great opportunity to explain about your country in the best possible way, in the shortest time span. “I can imagine capturing one of those moments when an idol maker is giving finishing touches to the idol of Goddess Durga before Durga Puja or may an old man with a hookah in a rural setting, would define India so well,” says Ravinder Yadav, a mass communication student.
Arnab Mishra, a B.Tech graduate and a budding filmmaker says that he wasn’t aware about the competition. “But now that I know, I’ll surely send my entry to the festival,” he says and adds that having spent his life in different parts of the country, he has seen various faces of India. “In fact, since I’m interested in photography and videography, I already have many videos that I can send for the competition,” he says.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
