Buzz from grapevine
Grapes from different regions of the world, used for making wines have always intrigued me. Apparently, there are 4,000 distinct grape varieties, from which wines are made. Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Pinot gris, Sylvanerand, chianti peppoli classico, pinot noir, carmenere and so on.
A chardonnay crackles with mineral acidity beneath some very generous, carefully oaked fruit or an unoaked, is clean and crisp, and full of punchy mandarin orange and peach, made from the fiano grape. Incredible, how different wines can be in taste, flavour, aroma, depending upon the grape from which they are made.
Chardonnay is the world’s most popular white wine grape. Sauvignon Blanc is found in France, in the Loire Valley and Bordeaux. Riesling is known as Johannesburg or White Riesling. Origin of the grapes fascinates me. To add to my knowledge and experience some great wines, I headed to The Bar at Grand Hyatt Mumbai, where Grape Expectations, a festival of wines, made from different grapes hailing from different wine regions of the world, was held recently.
Information apart, at a friend’s place recently, I sipped an arrestingly different full-flavoured, but completely beguiling chardonnay from Burgundy. Its flavours were reminiscent of delicate white flowers, spice, nuts and ripe pears dipped in honey. And I have had different wines from the same chardonnay grapes. This temperamental grape is affected by climate and soil variations, so a wide range of flavours and aromas distinguish the wines made from Chardonnay grapes.
Chardonnay is undoubtedly the most famous grape varietal for wines. Wine drinkers are inclined towards it and wine growers find it easy to grow. Argentina might have put Malbec back on the map, but actually the grape originates from southwest France. More and more wine producers are turning to organic grape production, especially in France, Italy and Spain, but one should remember that many producers are now adopting far more environmentally friendly practices than previous generations.
