Burn injuries? Help is just a call away
Who can predict when a joyous occasion turns into a mishap? Even though it’s understood that everybody must be safe while celebrating Diwali, no one can guarantee it will be so. However, it’s important to act fast in case such a situation arises. Keeping such emergencies in mind, a few helplines have come up in the capital who are doing their bit to make your Diwali special and will continue till a few days post the festival. Calling the numbers will put one through a doctor directly.
Dr Pritam Pankaj from New Look Cosmetic Skin Laser Clinic says that hand, face and eyes are most common injury calls they receive. “We make the callers speak to dermatologists directly depending on the state of their injuries. In case of a burn, it is important to put it under running water first. Also do not rub your eyes post the accident and consult a doctor immediately. Most important is that people should not self-medicate,” he says.
Dr Anup Dhir, senior plastic surgeon, Apollo Hospital says do keep the first aid box handy. Lighting a firecracker may seem easy and fun, but if one is not careful it can cause serious damage. About 98 per cent of burns are accidental and most of the people hurt are women and children below the age of 18. With a little care those injuries on face, hand and arms can be avoided.
Dr Dhir adds, “One should never attempt to re-light a dud because it can go off. Do not carry them in your pockets, as it could be a bit dangerous, after all they are explosives.” The Delhi Police and Fire department are maintaining a strict vigil. Rajan Bhagat, Delhi Police spokesperson says, “The time limit of bursting crackers remains 10 pm, we will be issuing a directive soon.”
