Bump-bastic newage moms
Fashionistas like Miranda Kerr, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Natalie Portman and other actresses have proved that a baby bump doesn’t come in the way of style at various red carpet events. And now mums-to-be will soon grace the ramps of Melbourne Spring Fashion Week for the first time this year to celebrate the beauty of various body shapes and sizes. In India too, pregnant women are now willing to flaunt and experiment stylishly with their baby bump.
Even though genetically Indian women are not as lucky as their global counterparts as they tend to put on more weight during pregnancy, there are ways to work on the flaws, feels designer Preeti Ghai. She says, “Recently, my friend Ramneek Pantal delivered a baby and she was flaunting her cute baby bump and looking gorgeous at social dos. I think solid dark colours look wonderful on pregnant women; it highlights the bump and cleverly hides the body fat. One can also opt for flowy dresses like maxis, gowns, jump suits and dresses in comfortable fabrics like lycra, satin or cotton.”
Designer Tarini Nirula suggests that a pregnant woman should avoid body-hugging clothes because they are uncomfortable and look funny. She says, “When I think of an elegant pregnant woman, the first image that strikes me is Angelina Jolie in her olive green gown that she wore at the premier of Kung Fu Panda. Pregnant women who want to look stylish should go for empire line dresses, maxi dresses and loose-fitted bottoms. Personally, I don’t like short tops on pregnant women and also they should avoid horizontal stripes and bold prints. White too is not advised as it makes the belly look huge.”
Madhvi Singhal, a fashion blogger and stylist, feels that good maternity wear should be comfortable and stylish. She says, “Women get that glow when they are pregnant and they can look very cute with a baby bump if teamed up with a nice outfit and accessories. I think cute dresses with small prints and dungarees for women are very chic. At a formal do they should wear something that covers their belly. Saris, skirts, short tops are a strict no-no.”
