Budget goes haywire

For students who partied and spent all of their savings on New Year’s Eve, are busy taking a stock of how they will manage their expenditure in the coming days. With the budget gone haywire in the beginning of the month, we spoke to some students about their saving spree for months ahead.
Anant Shukla, a student at Hansraj College, says, “I spent `15,000 in December for the New Year bash with my friends. Even though I tried to limit my budget to `10,000 but it extended and I had to borrow more from my friends. My pocket money is `10,000 per month and now I have to cut down on my expenses for next two months to get back to normal.”
Supriya Sinha, a second year student at Kamala Nehru College, feels it is okay to spend a large part of one’s savings to be with friends, even if it is just for a night.
She says, “I shopped a lot for New Year parties and now I am left with no savings in hand. My pocket money was finished before the New Year started and now I need to be frugal for sometime and control my expenses. I don’t think it was irrational to spend everything for a night, because the fun time with friends and all the praises for my new dress was totally worth it.”
Alok Yadav, a 23-year-old DU student, thinks that on special occasions like New Year’s Eve everything is overtly priced and thus the budget goes haywire.
He says, “I had saved some money in advance to celebrate New Year with my girlfriend, but eventually we both spent more than expected. We had gone for a trip to Manali with friends and didn’t realise that since it was the peak season, everything was charged double.”
For Anupama Sharma, a second year B.Com student at Gargi College, her New Year resolution also revolves around cutting down on extra expenditures.
She says, “For New Year parties, I had spent too much already. So this year I have decided to spend less on unnecessary items. I will splurge less on designer clothes and accessories. Even though I don’t shop from street markets that much, I think now I will wait for the sale. I will also spend less on the cosmetics and try to use home remedies for daily care.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
