Bring on the bright brocade!
Brocade is back in a big way, and it couldn’t have come at a better time! This festive season, this fabric is finding itself in smart attire for men and women. Short dresses, long silhouettes, mini skirts, lehengas and sherwanis in brocade are rocking the fashion scene.
It is a hit with members of B’town and celebrities abroad. Model Krithika Babu feels it is an ideal option for Diwali. “I am a fan of fusion clothing, so I would like to get a nice kimono style dress in brocade. A sleek and fitted dress in a subtle shade like brown or rust is also an option. But if I end up getting a short dress, it’ll be in a bright hue such as fuchsia or royal purple,” she says.
There’s nothing like a brocade sherwani to feel your ethnic best, whether it’s for a Diwali gathering or a wedding. “We Indians love colours. Flamboyance is our thing, and brocade fits in beautifully with the way we are made. A nice sherwani in brocade works really well on festive occasions. I have made the most of my beige-gold sherwani and think that it’s time I invest in a new one. This time, I am getting a simple white sherwani with intricate embroidery on the border,” says RJ Rakesh.
Remember to keep your accessories to a minimum when you’re sporting brocade, since the fabric itself is rich and tends to be heavy on the eye. Designer Namrata Sudhindra says, “The girls should just go with one big, solid neck piece or a cuff bracelet, a nice clutch and nude heels. The guys can sport a watch and funky leather sandals.” Adds Rakesh, “A nice pair of jootis will also complete the look!”
