Blokus does lift my spirit!
Mattel Games refers to ‘Blokus To Go!’, as the perfect strategy game for two players on the move. They can’t stop gushing about the removable storage panels that hinge onto either side of the game board. Or the clever manner in which the 42 game pieces snap lock smartly onto the board’s nubs. So you can’t really blame them for continually drawing your attention to this design innovation, where functionality is met superbly with engineering aesthetic.
You’re competing to play your 21 pieces each, ensuring each new piece touches no more than the corner of another piece of the same colour. It’s a wild scramble to discard your pieces that range from a one-hole square, through elongated 5-hole ‘L’s, crosses, and all manner of shape stacks. When no further placement is possible, the player with the least un-played pieces, wins! Clearly, a great deal of strategy can be brought to bear. But even when played with reckless abandon, pace of play slows, and you automatically start thinking ahead.
With a very heavy heart, I just signed the sale transfer papers for my eight-year-old Scorpio and left her in the hands of a local car dealer. A wide selection of games almost always travelled with me, sometimes played while travelling. She never got to see Blokus To Go!
