Blindly in love? Watch out for tapes of wrath

When clips of the JNU MMS scandal were leaked, tech-savvy youngsters weren’t quite shocked. Young lovers like shooting their private moments, often overlooking the hazard of it going public. But it’s time to stop being blind in love and take adequate precautions, feel youngsters. So while one has the right to one’s love life and having some fun, maybe there’s someone out there watching you and recording it all.

Gunjan Dua, a PR professional, warns, “If you’re willing to get under the sheets to have some fun, don’t be blind to the consequences that may follow. Girls must not trust guys blindly. Also, if a girl is interested in clicking private moments with her boyfriend, she must take the image or video and keep it with her. Don’t be casual about such things as it can be used against you.”
Be it for the thrill of voyeurism or the temptation to capture moments of intimacy, many tend to fall into the trap. According to Garima Sharma, a student, it’s not only about trusting blindly, but giving in to something like pornography just to please your partner. “I’ve seen girls who indulge in physical intimacy even if they’re not comfortable or are hesitant. Some allow their boyfriends to make their videos just to please their guy. But if you’re not comfortable with the idea of your private moments being shot, you must raise your voice rather than giving in,” says Garima.
Others feel assertiveness is the key word here. For 20-year-old Shireen Parhee, if a woman is not assertive enough in a relationship, she can be taken for a ride easily. “I had a friend whose ex-boyfriend would threaten to show their intimate pictures to her father. After they broke up, he would often call her and threaten her and forced her to meet him. Such threats are more common in cases where girls are not assertive. You have to take a stand in a relationship. The boy should never feel that he can convince you to doing anything at his will,” suggests Shireen.
In a similar case, media professional Monika Rawal shares, “When my friend fought with her husband and slapped him, he started threatening her that he would share their explicit videos with his friends. It’s important for girls to be alert when they’re in an intimate relationship. There are many who fall in the emotional trap and start thinking that the guy will marry them, and so it’s ok for him to shoot their video. They trust blindly, which proves fatal.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
