Black magic

In black we trust! And, black is the fashion calling of the moment. Defying the seasonal dictum, this colour has made a surprise entry in the sultry summers.
This is a summer with a difference. Pushing clichés aside, pastels have taken a back seat, instead, unconventional choices like royal blue, neon and above all black have caught the fashion avant garde’s attention.
“Black isn’t just another colour, it is a fashion statement and no style diary looks complete without its inevitable presence. So what if it’s summers, black can still justify its presence,” says designer Gautam Gupta.
For the naysayers, Gautam dilutes the pure ‘black magic’ with some stylish intrusion. “If you are still skeptical of going all black, then take the monochromatic route by going for a combination of black and white — the very ‘it’ combination of the season. Checks and stripes with a hint of black can be accommodated as well,” he adds.
Providing a world wide view of the black fascination, designer Ayan Sarkar says, “When Victoria Beckham stepped out in an all black sheath, word got out, on the new liaison between black and summer fashion. She also showcased a knee-length dress in pure black with a plunging neckline at the New York Spring Summer 2013 Fashion Week. In fact, NY SS 13 in many ways turned out to be a fashionable walk in the darkest alley, with many designers showing no inhibition for endorsing black.”
Black with a skimpiest appearance of gold, can never go wrong and this season, they are happy to co-exist. Shun the jewellery, simply adorn a black and gold combination as a summer gown, a short dress or a pencil skirt and it will take you places. And, if you still want to play by the rule, keep your attire in soothing shades, and just allow a single entry of black, maybe as the stiletto, the clutch or a sheer top. The effect will be chic,” he suggests.
While you tread on the black route, designer Kavita Tulsian adds her do’s and don’ts. She mentions, “Endorse black but keep the autumn and summer demarcation alive. The summer mood demands soft and breezy fabrics like sheers voile, lace, chiffon and linens. Soft silks qualify in the evening wear segment. The silhouette has to be summer-centric, avoid layers and keep the construction simple. A shift dress, one-shoulder bandage dress, an optical illusion design and an unstructured above the knee frock perfectly fit the summer bill. Don’t over-accessories as overdoing things in hot conditions can be a spoiler. If you want to do away with the monotony, remember black looks brilliant with contrasts. Play it with any shade and it responds on a positive note. For instance, a simple black khadi shirt with a skirt in contrasting colours of grey, antique gold or prints will stand out. Black and white remain a haute pursuit of Spring Summer 2013 and are still going strong.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
