Barjatya’s new soap has a social message
His family entertainers ruled the roost in the 90s but the new millennium hasn’t been too kind to Sooraj Barjatya, except for Vivaah, that proved to be his only saving grace. His last production Isi Life Mein sank without a trace at the box-office and ever since the producer-director has maintained a safe distance from Bollywood.
But not one to sit idle, Sooraj focused all his energies on the small screen and over the next few years his banner Rajshri Films rolled out quite a few successes such as Woh Rehne Wali Mehlon Ki, Yahan Main Ghar Ghar Kheli, Main Teri Parchhain Hoon and so on. And their latest offering Jhilmil Sitaron Ka Angan looks promising too, despite following the traditional love story format.
“The story is set in Indore which is a melting pot of traditional families. The underlying message of the serial is to ensure that money doesn’t become a cause for trouble in a marriage, especially when both partners are working,” says Sooraj. “It also touches upon the issue of the gharjamai (son-in-law) and in this case the boy is tricked into becoming one by his manipulative in-laws,” he continues.
Audiences that love family entertainers are largely small-town residents who often cannot afford to purchase tickets worth `300 at the movie theatre, according to Sooraj. “Our aim is to provide value-based entertainment to them and when it comes to television, these small towns and cities are more profitable than most metros,” he adds.
But that does not mean that he has forgotten films altogether. “I am writing a script at the moment and it’s my biggest and most ambitious project till date. Besides, I would love to work with Salman Khan again,” he says.
