Barefaced drummer on stage
He’s part of four bands — Barefaced Liar, The Doppler Effect, The Politik and Cobble Street. Twenty-year-old lead drummer and percussionist Suyash Gabriel, created magic onstage recently.
“I was born and brought up in Hyderabad and I have my relatives there. But we moved when I was very young,” he says.
In his third year (English Hours) at St Stephen’s College, Suyash “somehow manages” his studies and his performance with all four bands. “I can’t imagine giving up any band. I manage my time well,” he says.
Suyash’s tryst with music began at an early age. “My dad would play music for me when we were in Holland and that’s where my love for music began.” But he took up music seriously only after his dad’s death in 2001. About his affair with drums, he says, “I used to play on drums and pans; my parents spotted my talent and got me a kit.” He has trained for three years under Manoj Mavelly, a prolific drummer.
And what about the bands? “I joined Barefaced Liar nine months ago. While Politik is a Coldplay tribute band, Cobble Street is a jazz funk band. All the bands are important and if I ever had to choose one over the other, I would leave all of them,” Suyash confides.
Does he intend to take the film music route? “Bollywood is a great platform, but I want to first establish myself,” he says.
Well begun is half done, as they say!
