A balancing act
Entrepreneur, successful magazine editor, environmentalist and now director, Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi, wife of actor-producer Udhayanidhi Stalin, wears many hats. Being a director is the latest plume she’s added.
Crusader for nature:
As a kid, I never really was aware of this, but as I grew up, and became a mother, I realised I had to make the world a better place for us to live in, especially for my kids. Today, if I hear water running someplace a mile off, I instinctively bolt to turn it off!
A few years ago, I met social activist and environmentalist Abdul Ghani who introduced me to the ‘Lights Out’ campaign, and I started promoting it. It changed my perspective a lot indeed.
Incorporating eco-friendly aspects in filmmaking:
When I decided to script my film, I started working with Abdul to set up a system on my set to educate everyone on environment friendly projects. We are also going to count our carbon footprints so that we can plant trees wherever possible.
Being a woman director:
It’s all the more reason to prove my detractors wrong! Trends are changing and it’s all about the script and the audience, not whether a man or woman is at the helm. I’m directing a commercial, enjoyable rom-com with lots of comedy in it.
Family ties:
Udhay offered me a lot of advice. I don’t have plans to direct him soon; we are both in-the-moment people. My family too has been supportive, and helped me balance both my worlds.
