Balancing act
How do you know when it’s too much or too little? How much moisturiser do you apply every day or do you know how much sunscreen is the right amount?
If you’re in a rush, is it a haphazard application that you simply slather onto the patches you can see? Leila Sharma, make up artist and stylist from Bengaluru, who trained in the UK and worked with some of the biggest fashion houses, television commercials and fashion photographers shares how much is just not too much.
Beauty excess
As is in all things in life, too much of anything isn’t good. Likewise when dealing with products for the skin, one must err on the side of caution. Too much makeup makes the obvious very obvious. It only magnifies the faults and instead of hiding bad skin, it only makes it even more prominent. The same goes for skin products like toner, moisturiser, scrubs and cleansers. Remember too much toner will dry out the skin, too much moisturiser or sunscreen may lead to breakouts, scrub in excess use will thin out the skin and rob it of its natural protective layers and cleansers will do the same.
Define limits
How much moisturiser or sunscreen must one apply every day? Moisturiser works to add moisture to a dry waterless skin. Often mistaken with a lack of oil content, many people with dry flaky skin will use it and not find relief. That is because they require a heavier product that can balance the lack of natural oils in their bodies. Excessive use of either of these products can again be damaging. Too much moisturiser on oily skin can cause breakouts and lead to scarring and skin pitting. It is essential that a proper diagnosis is done to assess a problem before embarking onto a skin care routine. The weather also plays a very important role and skin varies from season to season.
More to explore
If you’re in a rush, sometimes you might end up making the mistake of a haphazard application of simply slathering onto visible patches. You can apply products when in a jiffy to cover specific areas. In fact it is advisable to treat areas that have problems as isolated. Normal skin unfortunately, is not that common. Most of us have Combination skin. This means that there will be areas of oily skin, often the T-Zone which is the forehead, down the nose and around the mouth and chin; with the rest of the face predominantly dry. Hence applying oil enhanced products in oily areas can only be asking for trouble. As to know when it’s too much or too little, your skin will tell you. Just learn to listen to it and follow your routine for about 10 days. At the end of that time you will have a pretty good idea of how well it’s working for you. Adjust the routine to suit your skin.
Face off
When using moisturiser and scrubs, the general rule of thumb is one large pearl size drop should suffice for face application. Use a little more if applying to the neck as well. Five to six drops of toner on clean cotton is enough to cover the face.
