Backless beauties
The writing on the fashion wall is concentrating on the back story and taking a cue, designers are raising the glam quotient on that specific area of the attire. Divas in backless ensembles have set the ball rolling on the red carpet, and soon we’ll see the sexy back making more frequent appearances.
Exploring the avenues on the back font, designer Nupur Kanoi finds some very stylishly crafted designs. “Looking back, the fascination with the back goes back to 1930s when all things feminine were celebrated in Hollywood. Frankly, it never left the scene, it keeps resurfacing mostly as a formal wear whenever women like to flaunt the ‘something different’ style. Personally I feel the cowl back has emerged as a strong contender for the top spot. A keyhole back style with a prominent carve out is a favourite in the western bridal wear category. For a more casual take, criss-cross backless tops, or criss-cross asymmetric straps taking a low plunge is a definite show-stopper. The best effect of low-cut back happens in a monochrome.”
Designer Mandira Wirk’s designing sensibilities is finding a lot of creative space in this concept. “I love to work on the backside detailing of a dress. Simply because as a designer it provides me the liberty to accentuate femininity without making it look vulgar.” She offers some interesting detailing, “A combination of lace and nets can be quite an eye-catcher. There are other techniques like floral designs, cut work, and not to forget the zip look where a fusion of zip and crystals bring an element of sensuality into the scene.”
“Bringing those ultra feminine backs has been the keynote to my latest collections. Since a considerable portion of your back is visible, to balance it out, the front portion should be conservative or the length of the dress should be longer. It looks best in a single shade or dual coloured cocktail dress where the pattern at the back is highlighted in a contrasting colour or the cut-out is highlighted with embroidery or embellishments,” figures out designer Shouger Merchant Doshi of Zanaaya Couture.
“Trust me, there are no dearth of choices here, just set your mood for a back show and you have the low back, the criss-cross, the double sided C’s (sort of like the Chanel logo), keyholes, semi-circles, zig zag, square, triangle, two lines, a gauging ring, all at your disposal,” she recommends.
