‘Awards are just the cherry on the cake’
From getting recognised with the quirky Babuji zara dheere chalo… to being nominated for several music awards, the most recent being the Best Indie Artist Award (Female) at the Video Music Awards India 2013 for her song Mahi Bin that she won, Sonu Kakkar has made a name for herself.
The singer says that her journey in the Bollywood music industry has been really good. “I have got the opportunity to sing some good songs across various genres, which has been a wonderful experience. Songs like Babuji, Madaari, Yeh Kasoor have helped me push my boundaries as a singer. With each song, I have discovered new aspects of my voice,” she says.
The singer says the award plays an important role in her life. “Awards are very encouraging. But they aren’t my only motivation. I sing because it is something I am very passionate about and awards are just the cherry on the cake. It feels great when others recognise your talent. However, I sing for myself,” she says and adds that she values criticism.
“You have to learn to take the good with the bad. For me, criticism is more important than praise because while praise makes you feel good about yourself, criticism keeps you grounded. It’s from there that you learn you’re not on the right track,” she remarks.
Sonu’s career has seen many ups and downs. Being an independent artiste hasn’t been easy and her love for singing has always helped her bounce back. “Singing is my passion before it being my career. So, while people might give up on their career after facing a few setbacks, one never gives up on passion, and thus I have survived all the failures,” she says.
