Artist Niladri Paul’s studio boasts of interesting art works created by him
In search of a place for his studio that is big as well as easy to manage, artist Niladri Paul turned towards Noida. Till some years back, he never thought of buying an apartment in Noida because he wasn’t keen on going too far from his friends, family and clients.
But then nothing affordable in Delhi excited him much and hence Paul turned to Noida. “I have been working at this place since the last three years,” he says, as he welcomes us inside the apartment with immaculate walls and floor in the posh Sector 93.
Paul surprises us by saying that he maintains the apartment alone without any domestic help. “I like to do everything, from mopping to decorating,” he says and adds that he even invites friends over for meals cooked by him.
It is late evening and it’s quiet all around. Paul says that his experience with his first flat in Noida (in the neighbourhood) was not that good. “I want to be in a place that opens up to natural surroundings. In the last apartment, I spent very little time and didn’t feel like working, as it was very suffocating. But here, it’s different. The kitchen opens up to beautiful trees and a swimming pool. In summers, kids play here. Even now, when there’s a slight nip in the air, kids come out early in the evening enliven the place.”
But it’s not just the view, nature and kids that have made this apartment one of the best places to spend his most precious times. The feel good factor has motivated him to develop it into his retreat zone. His artistic sensibilities combined with his love in many different things like electricals, carpentry, etc have combined to create some interesting stuff for the apartment. A bench-like candle stand with shlokas carved on it adorns one part of the main studio area. Paul says it was designed and executed completely on his own. “I have interest in many different things. I like to create objects that spark curiosity,” he says, showing us a lamp that hangs above the dining table. Created using clothes pegs and transparent plastic sheet with paintings by him, it doesn’t only provide light but also adds quirkiness to the room.
A green bottle with lights fitted inside it works as a night lamp or can replace a candle on a dinner table. And besides these quirky stuff, the major part of the room is filled with freshly done canvases and a big table with paints and brushes from around the world.
