Art-felt tales on rugs

While you are setting up your perfect abode and looking for interesting innovations to set on the floor, most of us have to go through mundane variety of carpets, identical to each other. It would be fun to have something funky or exquisite that would long be etched in memory. How about Manish Arora or Sabyasachi Mukherjee design on them, or works of stalwarts like Jehangir Sabavala, Farhad Hussain, S.H. Raza and Bose Krishnamachari! Such innovations and many more were on display at the India Design ID 2013.
Taking art beyond canvas, master carpet weavers at the Sunil Sethi Design Alliance (SSDA) weaved the work of legendary artists and designers on the carpets, that can grace your floors or walls. “Over the last few years, I felt that carpets look very boring. We needed to infuse some life into them. Two years ago, I collaborated with People for Animals, an NGO to raise funds for 31 veterinary hospitals across the country through an exhibition and took permission from stalwarts of art like S.H. Raza, Ram Kumar, Manjit Bawa, Farhad Hussain, Bose Krishnamachari as well as designers like Manish Arora, Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Rohit Bal, Ritu Kumar and Rajesh Pratap Singh and decided to reproduce their work for limited edition carpets,” says Sunil Sethi, president FDCI and owner, SSDA.
Rajesh Pratap Singh says, “My carpet is a 5’7’’ made of eco-friendly, pure New Zealand wool. Since the carpet depicts the skull of a tailor we call it a ‘tailorhead’. The concept design on the carpet is an intricate mix of the tools of the trade, cutting shears, dress designs and forms that constantly revolve inside a tailor’s head.”
Talking about his work, artist Bose Krishnamachari says, “I have used abstract medium to present maximum tones, textures and colours. It is a part of a series called ‘Love’. A temporary blindness is made to be desirable amongst the viewers in order to grasp the core intention of the creator. Denial of a faculty becomes medium of aspiration to know, feel, exercise and also to affect the notion of love. All this is intrinsic to my work.”
Artist Farhad Hussain’s work is also a part of the collection. “Carpets provided a novel medium for displaying my art works. Through my works I try to depict what I observe in my surroundings,” says Farhad. Each carpet comes with a certificate from the painters and is priced between `35,000 to over `5lakh.
Designer Manish Arora’s signature style is amply visible on the carpet. He says, “My work for the collection is primarily drawn from my best works and is quintessentially me. Carpets have become a part of basic décor. As I have been trying to diversify my work, this turned out to be an ideal medium.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
