Are you out there or not?

Space, for reasons that are obvious, has been branded as the final frontier. Its vast, unexplored expanse has been a huge question mark for one and all. And being curious, as humans always are, it’s natural that we have an urge to know who and what else is out there.

Last week, the United Kingdom released official, declassified UFO documents that ran into 6,700 pages. While the documents did not explicitly reveal or confirm the presence of extra-terrestrial presence or even state a confirmed UFO sighting, it did make an interesting read with all its stories and tidbits on reportings of sightings and unnatural occurrences, as reflected by its popularity on the Internet.
Made public at UK’s National Archive in Kew, the documents dating from as old as 1968 till 2008, contains reports including briefing Prime Minister Tony Blair on 1998 UFO sightings, the story of a UFO sighting off the Welsh coast in 1977 by a hotel owner, Ministry of Defense’s concerns about crashing of military jets owing to UFO encounters and more.
Thanks to the world of movies and television, think of a government-aided organisation that tracks UFOs and the image that first comes to one’s mind is high-tech laboratory with scientist using state-of-the-art equipment to track the presence of extraterrestrial presence. The reality, unfortunately, is far from that, as explained in the declassified files on what it is like to be working in one. They clearly stated how being a part of UFO Desk, a UK Defense Ministry organisation, mainly involved running thorough Internet searches.
Says Hrshikesh K., a sci-fi buff, “Anything related to outer space and beyond fascinated each and every person, albeit in different measures. Official government documents tend to be thorough and accurate, so it made an interesting read.
“But I must admit I was a bit disappointed that there was nothing to confirm UFO sightings so far. I mean, presence of aliens sure would spice things up for sure,” he adds with a grin.
The document, although interesting, has still left space enthusiasts asking many more questions. Some wondering if there really is no conclusive proof of UFOs so far, or are governmental organisations just withholding much more secretive, sensitive information. Clearly, the government records seem much more mysterious than the presence of aliens themselves.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
