Amrit captures big fat Indian wedding on film

Still from the movie Rabba Main Kya Karoon

After a National Award for his war film 1971 five years ago, director Amrit Sagar is back with another film. This time it’s a romantic comedy. Amrit says that the film is about two childhood friends who decide to marry each other.

“Basically, the film is about a lavish Delhi wedding. It’s a roller coaster ride where everything that was going right goes wrong on the day of the marriage,” says Amrit, talking about the film.
But quiz him about his transition from a serious war film — 1971, based on the Indo-Pak war — to a romantic comedy, Rabba Main Kya Karoon, and he says that he always wanted to dabble in a light topic.
“Even after I was through with 1971, I had said that I want to make a romantic comedy. It’s a subject that I always wanted to experiment with,” he says.
But then isn’t five years a long time to pursue something that one is interested in?
Amrit says that the writing of the film took a lot of time.
“I was never happy with the script initially so I got it changed a few times. I was also busy with television shows. During this duration, my company came up with Rakhi Ka Insaaf, Dekh Video Dekh and Jai Shri Krishna as well,” says Amrit, who enjoys working for both TV and films.
But having said that he was always interested in making a romantic comedy, Amrit doesn’t mean that he would keep making rom-coms. He says that he doesn’t want to restrict himself to one genre — he wants to experiment with many themes.
He thinks that if in the international scenario, a filmmaker doesn’t restrict himself to just one genre, why can’t we in India, also go on to experiment. This is why Amrit wants to make a science fiction film and obviously coming from the Ramanand Sagar family, mythology is something that fascinates him too.
“Our mythology has such great characters. I’m in awe of Krishna and Rama,” he says but adds that right now he is not thinking about mythology too much as it would require a huge budget.
“To make a mythological film that would be appreciated by people, you need to have all the special effects in place. And it requires both time and effort. You’ve to create a completely different world that people have not seen,” says Amrit, who thinks that Rama is the perfect tragic hero and that he would like to make a film on him.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
