Alone, but not lonely

“It’s gone away to a town called Yesterday, love ain’t here anymore…” Gary Barlow may have crooned soulfully indeed about the loss of love, and a doomed or unfulfilled romance has inspired many a musician, filmmaker or artist. But not our B’towners. The much-vaunted “Day of Love” may find them alone, but they’re certainly not lonely.

So whether they’re recuperating from a romance that went sour or simply not ready to be in a committed relationship just yet, Valentine’s Day won’t find B’town’s sexy singletons moping at home, with a doleful record or two for company.
For Bipasha Basu, the last year has been one of emotional upheavals galore. First, there was the rather public break-up with longtime beau John Abraham, and then reports of a troubled relationship with Rana Dagubatti. V-Day finds the Bong beauty in a mood to let down her hair and simply relax. “For years, I’ve always been in a relationship. This Valentine’s I’m single. I want to celebrate and flaunt my single status, so I’m going to go all out and pamper myself today. I have a great set of friends who love me unconditionally, and I’m looking forward to spending some quality time with them,” Bips says.
A night out with friends is just what the uber glam Sonam Kapoor has planned as well. While the buzz in industry circles is that Sonam has been dating her I Hate Luv Storys director Punit Malhotra, the actress hasn’t ever corroborated the speculation. So celebrating with a “special someone” has an entirely different meaning for the actress. “I’ve already planned my evening,” says an enthusiastic Sonam. “It’s my good friend Kari’s birthday, so my girl gang has organised a dinner for us. I’m going to wear my best dress and try to look my best — just for myself. For us, a girls’ night out equals a gala time, and that’s exactly what this Valentine’s Day will be for me.”
The irony of their V-Day situation cannot fail to have escaped these B’towners’ attention: They regularly top “most desirable” and “I’d like to go on a date with” lists, but a date is exactly what they won’t be going on today. And while they may not be too heartbroken, they certainly hope that the next year will allow them to plan an itinerary of a more romantic nature on February 14. “I’ve always maintained that being in love is a great feeling,” says Shahid Kapur, who has seen his fair share of heartbreak in the recent past. “I believe in the concept of a long-term relationship. I’m just waiting for the right girl, with whom I can share my thoughts and life with.” Now that’s a V-Day wish we can all identify with.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
