After a vintage decade, Sabya returns to colour

There was a time when Sabyasachi Mukherjee used to be a painfully shy boy, today he walks with an entourage and has a newly acquired paunch, which is maybe a sign of prosperity. But remains of his humble past are still there, when he talks about doing a show at Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week, after almost seven years. “I opted to

do Lakme Fashion Week, as it was easier, and the two markets are quite different. Another reason is that my business was expanding and it was getting extremely difficult to handle everything, so I decided to concentrate on movies,” says Sabya. Interestingly, the talented Kolkata boy has now also gone slow on films and will go for spectacular scripts that are challenging, maybe do one film in two years.
He confesses that FDCI President Sunil Sethi had offered him the finale many times in the past, but he felt it would be putting his fingers in too many pies. Now that he is on board with the WIFW, Sabya admits that Delhi has been one of the best markets in terms of sales and customer loyalty. “To tell you the truth, it is a show I have done for myself and it hopes to tempt the younger crowd, as I felt my ensembles were increasingly being picked up by women in the age bracket of 30-65 years. I am hoping this line will change all that,” he adds.
Sabya has added more structure and has returned to colour for the first time after his first show almost 10 years back breaking free from the vintage look that he has been courting for a long time. He promises the line to be 100 per cent organic with an extensive use of textiles, restricting embellishments to a bare minimum. “I know expectations are very high and a lot of people expect me to excel each time, but this hasn’t bothered me, I am a creative person and I will not succumb to pressure, external or internal. I don’t party, I am quite detached from the P3P crowd, so I will show my line and then people are free to dissect it,” he adds. Sabya believes that celebs may be his muses, but models have the perfect bodies and attitude to carry off designer clothes. “Vidya will come for the show, but she will not walk the ramp, models are far more superior on the catwalk,” he concludes.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.
