Add sizzle with red
There are several ways to show allegiance to the Christmas spirit. While giving gifts, listening to carols and pretending to be a good person at least for the remaining year are the safer bets, but trying to confirm by donning the official colours of red, gold and green is when you are walking on a potential mine field. One wrong move and you could land anywhere between the over-dressed christmas tree to the yawn inducing monochromatic elf. Why you could even potentially look like fire-truck red Santa himself! So, to not fall in the trap, it is necessary to dodge a few tricky areas and emerge victorious with that perfect Christmas look.
It is not necessary to wear all colours at once or be dipped in the same brush from head-to-toe. Designer Pallavi Jaipur says it’s more about having fun and enjoying yourself during the festival and you could just wear a Santa hat to get into the mood. “One must dress according to the occasion and don something that is elegant. Accessories play an important role and women could experiment with different kinds of coats and boots. The point is not to go overboard,” she tells us.
Separating Halloween from the day, even designer Rahul Mishra says that one must pay attention to details and let the spark lie in small things. “It’s important to remember that it’s a festival after all and since winters are gloomy anyway, colours like fuschia, turquoise and lime could do wonders when paired well. Though it’s essential to not go bridal and keep the mood more on the Western side,” he says.
However, considering that Indians have been celebrating Christmas for quite a few centuries now, trying to replicate a New York or a London in Delhi would only make it tragic.
As fashion designer Joy Mitra says, “Dresses look nice but it’s necessary to put an Indian spin on them. One could look at what Sabyasachi (Mukherjee) did for Aishwarya in Guzaarish. The colours can be rich reds, maroons and burgundy, while the jewellery should be kept light. Women should explore brooches which have become a rage,” he suggests. But since these holidays are essentially a celebration of eating and drinking, one must give precedence to comfort. “You could look stylish in gowns of bottle green, blues and blacks paired with gorgeous stoles. Or give a hint of red in trendy berets, caps, hats or even buttons. Though avoiding bling is essential,” says designer Gaurav Jai Gupta. But a rookie mistake that many end up making is over ruling the weather, while choosing your outfit and baring so much skin that it would make others shiver. Designer Rahul Mishra warns against over exposure which could be fatal to both one’s health and the oncoming New Year plans.
“There are plenty of beautiful winter clothes available and one can easily layer them to achieve a stylish look. One must feel good in order to look it, feeling numb all evening just because of wearing something uncomfortable will take the fun out of the festivity,” he remarks.
