Acting is the best medicine for Vineet

Vineet Kumar Singh is an Anurag Kashyap protégé who has films like Murabba from Bombay Talkies and Gangs of Wasseypur behind him. The actor is now looking forward to the release of Shorts, Ugly, Gori Tere Pyaar Mein and Issaq. Vineet’s turn as a hapless son in Murabba got him several accolades from the industry
Speaking of his association with Anurag, Vineet says, “I struggled for 14 years. I started off assisting Mahesh Manjrekar for seven years, hoping that one day I will get a chance to act. Finally, Manjrekar offered me a role in his film City of Gold after which I quit direction. After that I met Anurag Kashyap and showed him my work and he offered me Gangs of Wasseypur.”
What’s interesting about Vineet is that before he ventured into acting, he used to be a qualified surgeon. “My father was a mathematician and it was difficult to convince him that I wanted to join the film industry. I completed my medical studies, gave the degree in my father’s hand and said, ‘Now that I have fulfilled your dream, it’s time to fulfill my own,’” says the actor.
Vineet’s next release is Kashyap’s Shorts and the actor narrates a scary experience during the shoot. He says, “Short films don’t have huge budgets and we had to shoot a scene where my leg gets stuck in a railway track. Shooting in Mumbai with permissions would cost more than a lakh, so we shot out of the city with actual trains coming towards us. The scene was shot three to four times and I had a close shave as I managed to escape seconds before being hit.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
