Aascar supports Vishwaroopam

True to its title Kamal Haasan’s Vishwaroopam gets bigger by the day. In what trade circles say is a win-win situation, prominent producer Aascar Ravichandran has stepped in to support Kamal Haasan and bought the distribution rights of Vishwaroopam for Chennai and NSC (North Arcot, South Arcot and Chengalpet), the two major areas of BO collections — for an undisclosed amount.

The film releases on January 25 in 500 theatres. In return, Kamal will be starring in Aascar’s next mega project.
Kamal, the maverick personality who has scripted, directed, produced and also played the lead role in the spy thriller, had drawn flak for his visionary idea of releasing the multilingual film on the DTH platform first. Since clearing the air with distributors and theatre owners, the news now is that Aascar will ensure its wide release in the film’s most lucrative market in the city and surrounds.
“Yes, Kamal is my hero,” says Aascar. “He has given one of the biggest blockbusters, Dasavatharam, under Aascar Films. I stepped in for the very reason that Vishwaroopam, which has received a lot of hype in recent times, has turned out well and I am confident of its massive success at the BO,” he adds.
He also confirms that Kamal will be doing his next project, a multilingual one, under the Aascar banner. Known for his grand scale, what’s the film’s budget going to be? “It’s too early to talk about it, but the new film will have an expensive cast and a staggering budget,” he says.
Film circles view this as a twin smart move by which Vishwaroopam gets its due release over multiple screens while Aascar bags the star for a big budget film.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
