3D takes the cake

At first sight, they can easily be mistaken for a decor product, but a closer look reveals it’s a cake in disguise. Popular choice for the wow factor at parties, what makes them stand apart is their innovative shape and visual realism. Be it your toddler’s first birthday party, or your best friend’s wedding, get just what you want on your cake with a 3D effect.
“At my friend’s son’s first birthday, there was a long train lying on the table and I thought it’s a toy train, but after I looked at it closely, I realised it’s the birthday cake. It was colourful and tasted like any other cake. It was fun as kids were thrilled to be eating a compartment from a big train,” says Shireen, a mediaperson.
Explaining the concept of a 3D cake, Tanvi Mahajan from Viya Cupcakery says, “The main idea is to create a real life story on a cake for any occasion. The cake is created with the base cake of your choice, which is then coated with buttercream, cooled and covered with fondant (a sugar-based pliable dough).”
The basic concept of a 3D cake is to be able to eat the whole cake, including the figures, bows, flowers.
Another interesting feature is the use of a special kind of edible paper, which allows you to get a proper photograph placed on the cake. “I got it done for my brother’s engagement recently. They just asked for their picture and the photograph was well placed on the cake. It looked like a frame,” says Puneet Khanuja.
“The only drawback in 3D cakes is the use of sugar craft, which is hard in taste. So we try and create cakes where not much sugar craft is required. Apart from that, it’s the colours that do the magic in these cakes,” says Mukesh Kumar Dubey of De Cakes.
And if you want to have your cake and eat it too, give free rein to your imagination. “I recently asked for a 3D cake shaped like Superman holding my friend. We did it just for fun and it turned out beautiful,” says Rashi Arora, a student.
3D cupcake bouquets are also gaining in popularity. “A cupcake bouquet is a bouquet adorned with rose cupcakes. You can choose the flavour and colour of your cupcake roses,” says Tanvi.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
